Eligibility: Submissions are welcome from anyone within the Dickinson Public Library and Dickinson ISD service areas, including students attending private or homeschool programs. The competition is divided into three categories: Adults (18+), Teens (13-17 years old), and Children (6-12 years old). All essays must be the original work of the submitter and should not involve the use of AI in their creation.
Theme of the essay: Over the past two centuries, Dickinson, TX has transformed from a small settlement into a vibrant and diverse community that embodies the spirit of growth and togetherness. What is it that makes Dickinson such a wonderful place to call home? Dive into the unique qualities that define this town—its rich history, welcoming atmosphere, and the specific features that set it apart. Be sure to include some personal insights and keep it to 500 words or less.
Essays will be judged based on the following criteria:
Submission Period: Essays must be submitted between September 16th and September 30th by emailing them to Dpl@dickinsontexas.gov with “Essay Contest, Category (either Adult, Teen, or Children)”. Please note that no submissions will be accepted after September 30th. Submissions must be emailed to qualify. Please include your full name and contact information in your email.
A copyright release is required for all submissions to allow us to compile the entries into a 200th Bicentennial Book, which will be added to the Dickinson Public Library collection. Please find this on our website under the Dickinson 200th Bicentennial Essay Link. Complete the form and submit your essay.
Prizes: The 1st place winner of each category will receive a $50.00 Visa Gift card. 2nd and 3rd place winners will receive ribbons of excellence for their written works. Prizes and Ribbons will be given out at the event.
